CPD Direct now has an oil bathed starter upgrade kit available.
Item on the left is the power valve upgrade kit.

The kit is very expensive and unnecessary .Just silicon up the bottom drain hole ,put in a breather, fill with 70-90 ml of light fork oil .No need for a new stator .The existing operates fine covered in oil

Right, you don't need this kit for the oil bath, you can do that for basically free.

But if you're having trouble with your starting system, this would upgrade to improved gears/bearings/bendix.

I'm interested in the stator - does anyone know how much the new bikes put out? I'm trying to run a light and grip heaters, each at 35W. The system should do 70W, I think - but it's not enough. On my 2018 XC 300 the charging system can't keep up.

Is the system on the newer bikes upgraded?

Same as 2019 ec 300 ,70-75w.Trail tech make high output stators for KTM's As they share the same kokusan ignitions as the Spanish Gasser /Rieju , Im assuming you could use one of these .Need to do some homework though to ensure fit

If your light has a hi/lo possibility, you could do like I did. I have 50W lights with a low power / dipped beam possibility and heated grips with two powwer levels on my EC200. I have a couple of switches, giving me one of the following
  • full light
  • full heat
  • low light / half heat
  • off

If you trawl the Adventure bike sites, they probably have the Skinny on LED headlights, perhaps you can get a low current draw that is acceptable lumens? Make the most of your watt budget, what what!

farmerj,
What voltage are you running them on? AC or DC? If DC you will have some issues. A low consumption headlight light is about all you can add on DC. If AC you should have no problem. All that will happen is that your headlight will dim a bit when the grip heaters are on.

I ran grip heaters on AC wired at full power only, for the past 10 years. Still on the same Ballistic brand lithium battery. My LED lights on high setting (DC) would run the battery down after about an hour and then I'd need to use the kickstarter. Not an issue because I didn't do very much night riding. I kept the LED headlights on low setting during the day and had the grip heaters turned on; no problems with battery charging. The usual riding time for me is from 5-6 hours (not including breaks).

If you add in a low setting for the grip heaters, they should work fine. You could also leave the headlight off while the grip heaters are on high, then change to low heat and turn on the headlight.

Ideally the battery should only be used for the estart.

Helpful thoughts & tips guys, good info. as always, thank you!

I've got more questions Neil, so I'll move to another thread since I'm kind of going "off topic" on this one.
