Two strokes are much easier to not be finance destroying, but the motor is not where you will get hurt. At some stage you will need to do a piston change that any mechanically enclinef person can do. The internet is full of tips on the following, do some research. Watch for:

Cracked rims, broken spokes especially at the rim ( worn wheel bearings are an easy fix)
Pitted, scratched on dented chrome fork sliders, or bent forks.
Twisted triple clamps, worn steering stem bearings.
Cracked or twisted frame (especially near foot pegs), worn frame rails on bottom.
Chain wear on frame, swing arm or engine case. Seized swing arm chain adjusters
Leaking or cracked fuel tank
Leaking shock

Everything else is pretty well hard to detect or easy to fix or a "consumable"'As for capacity, a 125 is harder to ride than a 250, as the spread of power is smaller and therefore requires many more gear changes and a lot more momentum to carry you through obstacles (ie you need to ride it faster) and is therefore harder physically unless you really no what your doing. Just my 5 cents, hope it helps!

I would definitely lean toward the 250. A 125, like Simmo said, requires some definite clutch work and also depending on your weight, may be rather underpowered if you're over 180 lbs. The fun factor may wane on a 125 in a steep hill scenario. Also a 125 will probably have been ridden harder and require a top end sooner than a 250.

Just my opinion- get a 250, you'll be able to tailor the power and suspension to your liking. Fast/ slow/inbetween- you'll be able to make the 250 work. On a 125 everything is going to be high rpm, you can modify them all you want but there will still be an all or nothing aspect to the power. Let us know what you get, if there's anyplace that knows GG inside out, it's this forum!

Don't dismiss a 300. A 300 can be lugged and short shifted off the pipe and still have torque to move you over obstacles.

I can't believe you've gotten so many responses and not one person asked your size or skill level yet. That will really decide if you want a 125 or 250 in my opinion.
