Default 1998 EC 250 Clutch Basket Failure

Hello all. I recently acquired a 1998 model EC or XC 250 (U.S. Version). It had been setting up for about 10 years. I rebuilt top end and got it running relatively well but it was making a horrible knocking sound at idle and low rpm's. I pulled the clutch cover off and discovered that all of the rubber bushings on the back of the clutch basket were in pieces and had been thrown throughout the engine casing. The metal ring that holds them in place (normally riveted to the back of the basket) had broken in two and was pretty mashed up. All bearings seemed to be in good condition. Any ideas as to what could have caused this? Also, I can't find an after market clutch basket for the 1998 model. Would a 2000 model fit?

There are a few after market baskets, Rekluse which is the better way to go. Just the basket you dont have to have the auto clutch. Barnett, S3 there might another brand there. And any year two stroke gasgas 250/300cc clutch will fit.

I looked at Rekluse and a few others. They all listed fitment for years 2000 and up. I just wanted to make sure there were no major differences between 98's and early 2000's. I know the 98's are counterbalanced but I didn't think it would affect the clutch basket specs. Thanks for the comment.

I have a 97' that is running my 12's clutch since I have a Rekluse in it. Zero problems with fitment.

And check out Mcnuts clutch for sale.

Awesome. Thanks for the help. I'll check out the one in classifieds too. This bike has been one massive headache to get back in shape after setting up for so long. Unfortunately, I already have more in it than its worth. I'm just ready to ride and get some enjoyment out of it.
