Most guys here drill a hole on top of the housing and tap it for a fitting, which can then have a hose attached to vent up under the tank.

But I did as you suggest - I used a small plastic fitting that has barbs on each end (in this case, a drip irrigation connector) and pushed one end through the rubber wiring grommet, being careful not to damage any wires. So it can be done without drilling the housing.

You might be able to insert a short piece of metal tubing through the grommet (to which you can add a piece of hose) and accomplish the same thing.
